Manoa Nursing Sends Student Veterans to National NATCON2017 Conference

The Veterans to Nurses Program at UH Mānoa Nursing supported three student veterans from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa to attend the largest gathering of student veterans in the nation, NATCON 2017. Short for National Conference, this year’s event was the 9th annual conference that the Student Veterans of America (SVA) Organization has organized and planned.

Student Veterans of America is a non-profit organization that supports student veterans via chapter organizations across the country at colleges and universities.

This year’s conference was held at the Disney Land Hotel in Anaheim, CA. The theme was “Empowering Tomorrow’s Leaders.” The SVA National Conference is an important training, professional development, and networking opportunity for student veterans, faculty, and staff, which is tailored to strengthen their ability to support student veterans on-campus and in higher education. Attendees were able to network, participate in breakout sessions with six different themes, and listen to several VIP speeches including one from the former Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs, Robert McDonald.

The Mānoa student veterans who attended the conference are members of the UH Mānoa Student Veteran Organization (SVO) leadership. Terrance McDermott, a senior botany student who is the current SVO president, Charles Haygood who is currently a senior in the School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene program and SVO vice president, and Navpreet Sandher who is a senior in the Kinesiology and Rehabilitation Science program.
