Nurses and Doctors from Okayama, Japan Integrate Simulation Training into Curriculum, Hospitals

In late July, Okayama University coordinated the travel and simulation training for nine Japanese nurses and doctors who were interested in learning how to utilize high fidelity simulation at their nursing school and hospitals. The goal of the four-day interactive educational workshop was to explore the current trends in healthcare simulation learning.

The simulation learning course at the UH Translational Health Science Simulation Center (UH THSSC) was customized for Okayama University and was designed by Dr. Lorrie Wong who is an Advanced Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator. The course included didactic theory, hands-on practice, and performance feedback on utilization of simulation learning. Participants developed an understanding of how to effectively integrate simulation learning within their healthcare programs.

Workshop topics included an overview of healthcare simulation, debriefing and facilitation skills, and key lectures were provided by UH THSSC staff. Associate Director for Quality and Patient Safety Melodee Deutsch spoke to participants about the integration of adult learning theory and patient safety into simulation learning. Associate Director for Graduate Simulation Allen Hanberg, a Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator, presented on design and validation of simulation scenarios. Dana Ing, Associate Director for Pediatrics and Women’s Health conducted an interprofessional team simulation which provided participants with hands-on practice debriefing and assistance with integration of simulation into their curriculum or hospital practice.

The nurses and doctors from Japan were pleased with the success of the simulation training. Participants felt confident that they would be able to travel back to Japan and be able to integrate simulation into their curriculum, and were excited to develop simulation and debriefing scenarios. The training provided Japanese faculty and healthcare leaders a new perspective on the U.S. nursing school system by demonstrating how critical thinking and patient safety is integrated into UH Manoa Nursing curriculum.
