2014-16 Strategic Plan

University of Hawaii at Manoa, School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene
Effective May 1, 2014 to June 30, 2016

During Fall 2013- Spring 2014, through a participatory process (including students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members) the school developed an 18 month strategic plan that aligned with UH Manoa’s plan and timelines.  Four goals and eleven imperatives strove to guide the school with realistic and achievable goals from May 2014-December 2015 ensuring quality education.  The plan was extended for an additional six months through June 2016.

UHM Goal #1: Transformative Teaching and Learning Environment

  • Strategic Imperative #1: Engage faculty and students in a modern, dynamic, and multi-cultural curriculum supported by national standards, exceptional student-centered learning environments and state of the art technologies resulting in excellence in education.
  • Strategic Imperative #2: Support progression and graduation of all students, including those from underrepresented groups including Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders.

Goal # 1: Transformative Teaching and Learning Environment focused on engaging faculty and students in a modern, dynamic and multicultural curriculum supported by student-centered learning and state of the art technology and supporting the progression and graduation of all students, including those from underrepresented groups.  Highlights of the work accomplished included substantive changes to curriculum pathways to reflect future directions of the school and national trends, overall achievement of progress indicators and successful accreditation of the Dental Hygiene program.

UHM Goal #2: Global Leading Research University

  • Strategic Imperative #1: Improve research/ scholarship infrastructure to meet needs of faculty and students and expand research endeavors.
  • Strategic Imperative #2: Promote and reward collaborative scholarship by faculty and students.
  • Strategic Imperative #3: Invest in key areas of research and scholarship.

Goal #2: Global, Leading Research University focused on improving research scholarship infrastructure for faculty and students, investing in key areas of research and scholarship while promoting and rewarding collaborative research efforts. Highlights included a comprehensive review of existing infrastructure, policies and procedures, integration of evidenced based practice content in curriculum and increased collaborative interprofessional research.

UHM Goal #3: Engaged University

  • Strategic Imperative #1: Promote workforce diversity by increasing representation of Native Hawaiian (NH), Pacific Island (PI) and other under-represented/at risk people in SONDH who reflect the understanding, values, and knowledge of the host culture.
  • Strategic Imperative #2: Foster student and alumni relationships with SONDH for lifelong connection and mutual support.
  • Strategic Imperative #3: Expand community outreach engagement by partnering with community organizations to address the needs of underserved populations, especially Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders

Goal #3: Engaged University focused on promoting workforce diversity within the school, enhancing student and alumni relationships for lifelong connection and expanding community partnerships to address the needs of underserved populations, especially Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders. Highlights included increased awareness of school’s diversity among students, faculty and staff, increased funding for Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander and Veteran students, expanded networking opportunities for students with alumni, developed a comprehensive communication plan, and enhanced recognition for students in leadership roles.

UHM Goal #4: Facilitating Excellence

  • Strategic Imperative #1: Maintain and optimize technology for communication, information, and simulation to enhance education, administration, research, and service.
  • Strategic Imperative #2: Create a positive, respectful, safe, and productive working and learning environment assuring mutual respect and ethical behavior.
  • Strategic Imperative #3: Manage human, facility, and fiscal resources efficiently and effectively.

Goal #4: Facilitating Excellence focused on optimizing technology for communication, information and simulation, managing resources efficiently and effectively while creating a positive, respectful environment for all.  Highlights included a comprehensive assessment of current and projected technology needs, additional professional development in IT resources, greater transparency of school resources, and approval of a shared governance document.
