Biography
Ben Newton is an Assistant Instructor at the University of Hawaii at Manoa School of Nursing & Dental Hygiene where he works with undergraduate students in community and population health. He previously worked as an intensive care unit (ICU) nurse in various ICU settings for 14 years. This experience continues to shape his perspective on patient care and the broader factors that influence health.
Newton is an Advanced Population Healthcare Nurse (APHN) with a master’s degree and his current focus is on community and population health approaches that emphasize community-driven initiatives. His interests include the healing role of connection to aina and how place-based relationships can support both individual and community well-being.
His work in nursing education includes a focus on aina-based learning, food sovereignty, and community resilience, with an emphasis on culturally grounded and community-centered approaches to care. Newton values creating learning environments where students can enhance their clinical thinking, collaborate, and engage meaningfully with the communities they serve.
He is a member of Sigma Theta Tau. In his free time, he serves as the administrative lead for Hawaii’s Adaptive Climbing Group and helps support access to rock climbing for individuals with a range of abilities.
