Biography
Dr. Katie Azama is a tenure-leading Assistant Professor at the University of Hawaii at Manoa’s School of Nursing & Dental Hygiene. She is a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner and an Advanced Public Health Nurse. Dr. Azama earned her PhD in Educational Psychology and has more than a decade of clinical experience as a nurse practitioner in diabetes management and occupational health.
Before joining the school, Dr. Azama served as a nurse practitioner and held leadership roles focused on the professional development of nurses and advanced practice providers. She has been recognized by the Hawaii State Center for Nursing and The Queen’s Medical Center for her work in developing a nurse practitioner fellowship, an evidence-based practice nurse mentoring initiative, and other professional development programs for nurses and other healthcare clinicians.
Dr. Azama’s program of research centers on occupational health and innovative strategies to enhance workforce retention, with a particular focus on the healthcare sector. She has served as principal investigator on multiple projects addressing healthcare worker burnout, with funding from the Center for Pacific Innovations, Knowledge, and Opportunities (PIKO) and Sigma Theta Tau. Her scholarship has contributed to greater awareness and understanding of burnout and mitigation strategies among healthcare workers in Hawaii.
