Distinguished Speaker Dean Allyssa Harris

Dr. Allyssa Harris is Dean and Professor at Prairie View A&M University School of Nursing. Dr. Allyssa L. Harris is a leader in nursing education, clinical practice, and policy. She serves on the Editorial Advisory Board and Column Editor for Nursing for Women’s Health, the Research Advisory Panel for the American Women’s Health Obstetric and Neonatal Nursing association, the Board of Directors and Secretary for the Nurse Practitioners for Women’s Health Association, and a member of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee for the American Association of Colleges of Nursing. In Texas, she is President of the Texas Organization of Baccalaureate and Graduate Nursing Education, is on the Board of Directors for the Good Samaritan Foundation, and is an Advisory Board Member of HCA Houston Medical Center Hospital. Dr. Harris has received awards for leadership in education from the New England Regional Black Nurses Association, National Black Nurse Practitioner’s Association, and the Inspiration in Women’s Health award from the Nurse Practitioners for Women’s Health Association. In 2024, she was inducted into the inaugural class of Academy of Diverse Nurse Leaders by the National Black Nurses Association and is a Distinguished Fellow in the National Academies of Practice. 

Dr. Harris’ program of research focuses on reducing adolescent sexual risk behaviors, in particular, understanding the role of parent-adolescent sexual communication and media influences of sexual risk behaviors. She conducts research in the areas of diversity and leadership among nurses of color and has numerous publications related to women’s health. Harris is a co-editor/author of a nationally and internationally utilized guidelines book, Guidelines for Nurse Practitioners in Gynecologic Settings.

Parking

The Lower campus parking structure is a $5.00 flat rate 5:00 A.M. to midnight. Stalls are also located near Campus Center, Kuykendall Hall, Varney Circle and Kennedy Theater. About the Frances A. Matsuda Chair

Dr. Frances A. Matsuda Sano established the endowment in 1991and requested that the Chair be used to develop knowledge, processes and structures to improve health outcomes for women. The Chair provides continued recognition of the investment Dr. Sano made with her life in support of community-based interventions to improve women’s health in the Pacific Basin. Dr. Sano was a native of Kauai who was a physician and held a PhD degree. She completed her higher education in Japan where she resided for nearly 60 years. 

Dr. Holly B. Fontenot, PhD, APRN, WHNP-BC, FAAN, FNAP is currently the Frances A. Matsuda Chair in Women’s Health for the Nancy Atmospera-Walch School of Nursing. She is also the Associate Dean for Research for the Department of Nursing and Professor.
