The Hawaii Interprofessional Education and Collaborative (HIPEC) Alliance program successfully launched as a pilot in August 2017. The HIPEC Alliance team began providing various health services for students at the Hawaii Keiki Clinic at Dole Middle School. These services included behavioral health, clinical pharmacy consultations, oral health, in addition to urgent and primary care services. In 2018, the HIPEC team was chosen by the National Center for Accelerating Interprofessional Practice and Education as one of six exemplary projects in the country that would be highlighted by the National Center.
Interprofessional education continues at Dole Middle School with care being provided to children with complex health issues in school-based health centers in an effort to allow students to remain in school and engaged in learning. The success of this program has been demonstrated by the increase in the number of children returning to class after being evaluated by the interprofessional education practice team. Further expansion of interprofessional education in the HK program is being discussed in order to address the unique needs of the schools while also engaging our various health care students in a rich and valuable learning experience.

This HIPEC project received funding in 2017-2018 from the National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education, which is supported by a Health Resources and Services Administration Cooperative Agreement Award No. UE5HP25067. The National Center is also funded in part by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the John A. Hartford Foundation, the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and the University of Minnesota. Matching funds were provided by the Hawaii State Center for Nursing’s Hawaii Action Coalition.
