Application Information

All graduate degree programs within the Department of Nursing admit on a rolling admissions basis. Each applicant is evaluated on the merit of their individual application and placed into one of three categories: admit, alternate or deny. Notifications about decisions occur as soon as the submitted application is reviewed. The holistic admissions process includes an interview for applicants who meet the minimum requirements.

We encourage applicants to apply beginning September 1st both in the NursingCAS system and the UH Manoa Graduate Division. Completed applications are reviewed beginning October 2.

Applicants must meet the requirements of both the UH Manoa Graduate Division and the Department of Nursing for admission to the program.

International students are welcome to apply.

Admission Requirements for Baccalaureate to PhD

Education

Non-nursing Baccalaureate degree or higher from an accredited college or university earned by July 15 of the program start year.

Grade Point Average (GPA)

Undergraduate GPA 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale.

Licensure

Current unrestricted RN license in state or jurisdiction of practice.  Students in BS Nursing programs can apply to the PhD. However, they must provide evidence of passing the NCLEX-RN exam and have a current RN license in the state or jurisdiction of practice by the end of the first semester of the PhD program. Students who fail to pass the NCLEX-RN exam may not continue in the program.  For Non-US Citizens, documentation of professional nursing credential from their country is required.

English Language Proficiency

If an applicant’s native language is not English or has not obtained a bachelor’s or master’s degree from an English speaking college, then the applicant must submit official Test of English a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores with a minimum score of 600.

 

Admission Requirements for Master’s to PhD

Education

Master’s degree or higher in any field from an accredited college or university.Admission is contingent upon completion of the master’s degree requirements no later than the first day of class of the first semester of PhD coursework.

Minimum Grade Point Average (GPA)

3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale.

Licensure

Current unrestricted RN license in state or jurisdiction of practice. For Non-US Citizens, documentation of professional nursing credential from their country.
