UH Translational Health Science Simulation Center Spring Activities

Nurses from Japan and South Korea Participate in Simulation Workshop

In November 2018, the UH Translational Health Science Simulation Center (UH THSSC) hosted a 5-day simulation workshop for. 17 nurse educators from Kyoto, Tokyo, and Hirosaki, Japan and disaster nurses from South Korea. The educators spent 4 days learning about simulation skills to inform their teaching. Lorrie Wong, PhD, RN, CHSE-A, UH THSSC director, Melodee Deutsch, MS, MPH, RN, CPHQ, UH THSSC Associate Director for Quality and Patient Safety and Dana Ing, MSN, NNP-BC, APRN, APRN-RX, UH THSSC Associate Director for Pediatrics and Women’s Health, coordinate the 4 days focused on simulation facilitation skills. Deutsch lectured on integration of quality and patient safety into simulation. Wong and Ing discussed advanced facilitation skills and scenario development.

On the final day, participants met with Kristine Qureshi, PhD, RN, CEN, PHNA-BC, FAAN, associate dean for research and global health, and Gary Glauberman, PhD, RN, PHNA-BC, NHDP-BC, Advanced Public Health Nursing program director, to learn about global health initiatives. Qureshi discussed ways UHM Nursing could collaborate on global health issues with nursing colleagues in Japan and Korea and Glauberman provided a lecture on service-learning. The workshop was extremely productive with a week filled with collaboration and sharing of ideas to improve healthcare for all.

Friends of Pharmacy Award Presented to Lorrie Wong

Lorrie Wong, PhD, RN, CHSE-A, director of UH THSSC received the 2018 Hawaii Pharmacists Association’s Friends of Pharmacy Award. She was recognized as a non-pharmacist who has made significant contributions toward improving or expanding the profession of pharmacy in the State of Hawaii. Wong has had extensive involvement with the Council of Health Science’s Hawaii Interprofessional Education workgroup that has fostered collaboration between medicine, nursing, pharmacy, social work and public health.

Online Preceptor Training

In spring 2018, UH Manoa Nursing offered a one-time Online Preceptor Training designed to help clinicians in health care settings develop and/or enhance their preceptor skills in order to be more effective in their role in the education of APRNs. Participants completed five at your own pace modules and attended one live online virtual meeting. The program was offered free of charge to 10 participants. Topics included: Roles and responsibility of preceptors; Integrating the responsibility of student supervision into the workflow of a busy practice; Coaching skills – providing quality feedback and goal setting; and Trends in interprofessional collaborative practice.
