Student Veteran Advisor
Veterans interested in pursuing a nursing degree or who are currently enrolled in a nursing program, will have access to the student veteran advisor. The student veteran advisor serves as the main liaison with the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Kapiolani Community College, and neighbor island (Kauai Community College and Maui College) schools of nursing and the Veteran’s Affairs office. The advisor will assist student veterans with financial, academic, health, and social issues and will refer student veterans to University and community services and resources. Students can meet with the advisor regularly to resolve academic barriers and find the necessary support that will help student veterans meet their goals.
The student veteran advisor will provide veterans with:
- Academic advising.
- Social support.
- Assistance with translating military medical experience into college credit.
- Information on VA education, health, and disability benefits.
- Referral to veteran services on campus and in the community.
The program offers credit by examination options for student veterans who have military medical experience or training. Credit by exam will assist veteran students by decreasing the time to graduation by fulfilling credit requirements towards degree completion.
Social Support Services
Transitioning from military to civilian culture requires support from families, peers, academia, and the community. Such support can increase the likelihood of student veteran success. The program will offer various extracurricular activities and will provide opportunities for student veterans to interact with their fellow students and civilian counterparts. Informal gatherings, a Veterans Day Celebration, student veteran orientation, and other events will bring individuals and groups together to build the social support that will be the foundation for student veteran progression.
