Merle Kataoka-Yahiro presented at the National Institute of Health Setting Priorities for Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Health Research: A Virtual Invited Workshop

Merle R. Kataoka-Yahiro, Dr.P.H., M.S., APRN, professor at the UH Manoa Nancy Atmospera-Walch School of Nursing completed an invited presentation to the National Institute of Health (NIH). She was one of 31 invited presenters to address setting priorities for Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Health Research. The NIH virtual workshop was held on March 30 – April 1, 2021.

Merle Kataoka YahiroThe overarching goal of this 3-day (15hours) workshop was to assemble a multi-disciplinary panel of invited experts across multiple health-related domains to identify key knowledge gaps in the primary prevention of chronic disease among Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander populations. The workshop was intended to identify disparities, possible barriers, and opportunities for prevention research in Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders from a “populomics” perspective. Experts from multiple disciplines were assembled to examine research gaps from a biological, genetic/genomics, behavior and lifestyle, social epidemiology, and neighborhood/built environment perspective. Representatives from NIH Centers in attendance were NHLBI, NCI, NHGRI, NIA, NIDDK, NIMH, NIMHD, and NINDS.

Dr. Kataoka-Yahiro’s presentation was on Diabetes and Kidney Function – Kidney Disease: Renal Biomarkers. There were two other Hawaii attendees at this NIH Workshop including Dr. Marjorie Mau (UHM JABSOM) and Dr. John Kauwe, BYU-Hawaii. Other expert presenters were from UCSF, Stanford, Pew Research Center, NYU, Northwestern University, University of Michigan, Brown University, John Hopkins University, University of California San Diego, USC, Columbia University, Duke University, University of California, Irvine, Mt. Sinai Hospital, Temple University, UCLA, BYU-Hawaii, University of Chicago, and Emory University.
