The dental hygiene program at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa is the only baccalaureate level program in the state. It offers the educational preparation required of dental hygienists to provide oral health care and education to the people of Hawai’i, the continental U.S., and the Pacific-Asia region. Students majoring in dental hygiene can become licensed professionals who offer preventive, education, and therapeutic services for the control of oral diseases and the promotion of optimum oral health.

Events for Prospective Students

Potential applicants to the program are highly encouraged to attend an open house event. Visit the event page for upcoming events.

Pre-Admission, Advising & Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE)

  • Advising for Prospective Pre-Dental Hygiene and Transfer Students: The Pre-Dental Hygiene advisor assists students in clarifying educational goals, aligning them towards career preferences, and navigating the academic requirements for successful progress toward the degree.
  • Dental Hygiene Licensure and State Authorization: Upon completing the program, licensure eligibility in the State of Hawaiʻi is determined by the Hawaiʻi Board of Dental Examiners. It’s important for students intending to practice outside of Hawaiʻi to verify licensure requirements with the respective state’s licensing board.
  • College-Level Exam Program (CLEP): CLEP exams are accepted, offering students the opportunity to satisfy course requirements for the dental hygiene program. Consultation with a NAWSON Office of Student Services advisor is recommended to understand the application of non-graded course equivalencies.
  • WUE: Out-of-state students from specific states may qualify for a special tuition rate under the WUE program. More information can be found on the UH Mānoa Admission’s WUE page.
