Two-Step Application Process

Application requirements are found in the applications listed below.

Step 1 – Apply to UH Manoa Undergraduate Admissions

  • Required for all new applicants and returning, transferring, and unclassified UH Manoa students.
  • https://manoa.hawaii.edu/admissions
  • Fee: $70
  • For your major, choose Dental Hygiene

Step 2 – Apply to the Dental Hygiene Program

Admission Requirements

Admission of students to the Bachelor of Science in dental hygiene program is based on clearly defined written criteria, procedures and policies.  The selection process takes into account several factors, including:  academic performance in high school,  at the UH Manoa or other college / university;  performance on standardized tests; other indicators that help to assess the applicant’s potential to successfully complete the program.

Criteria for UH Manoa student and college transfer applicants include the following minimum requirements:

Cumulative GPA

2.5 in all college/university credits

Basic Science GPA

The following courses will be calculated for Basic Science GPA:

  • PHYL 141/141L and PHYL 142/142L
  • CHEM 161 or BIOC 141
  • MICRO 130/140L
  • FSHN 185

Individual Interview

Selected qualified applicants will be called for an interview.  Interviews are held in early March.

Completion of 31 Prerequisite Credit, General Education and Other Requirements

At the time of application, students must have completed all prerequisite courses before submission of an application. In addition, students have “General Education” and “Other” requirements to complete. It is highly recommended that the student contact a dental hygiene advisor.

  • CHEM 161 General Chemistry I (DP, 3 credits)
  • COMG 151 or 251 Personal and Public Speech (DA, 3 credits)
  • ENG 100 Composition I (FW, 3 credits)
  • FSHN 185 Science of Human Nutrition (DB, 3 credits)
  • MICR 130 General Microbiology (DB, 3 credits)
  • MICR 140L General Microbiology Lab (DY, 2 credits)
  • PHYL 141 Human Anatomy & Physiology (DB, 3 credits)
  • PHYL 141L Human Anatomy & Physiology (DB, 1 credit)
  • PHYL 142 Human Anatomy & Physiology (DB, 3 credits)
  • PHYL 142L Human Anatomy & Physiology (DB, 1 credit)
  • PSY 100 Survey of Psychology (DS, 3 credits)
  • SOC 100 Introduction to Sociology (DS, 3 credits)

Transfer Applicants

Check the UH System Course Transfer Database and cross-reference their equivalent courses with the UH Manoa General Catalog for designations. Information on these requirements can be found in the UH Manoa General Catalog and UHM advising centers.

Graduation Requirements

Any missing graduation requirements will need to be met by the end of the dental hygiene program.

English Language Proficiency

If an applicant’s native language is not English or if they have not obtained a bachelor’s or master’s degree from an English-speaking college, then the applicant must submit an official Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score with a minimum score of 600.
