About the Hawaii Department of Education Partnership

In 2014, UH Manoa Nursing partnered with the Hawaii Department of Education (HIDOE) to create the Hawaii Keiki (HK): Healthy & Ready to Learn Program. In its early years, the program had 5 school nurses at 5 HIDOE schools on 3 islands. The program continued to grow and provided school nurses statewide to all 15 HIDOE Complex Areas on all islands. In 2024, the program is celebrating 10 years of partnership with the HIDOE and now has more than 170 healthcare providers that serve all 258 HIDOE public schools.

For more information about the HIDOE, visit their HIDOE website.

School Nursing Services for HIDOE Partnership

The HK HIDOE Program places APRNs (Advanced Practice Registered Nurses also known as nurse practitioners), RNs (Registered Nurses), and Health Technicians in HIDOE health clinics located on public school campuses to provide school-based health services to students.

The program supports achievement of student, school, and system success by:

  • APRNs, RNs, and/or Health Technicians are available in participating schools and with parent/guardian consent, they work together to deliver screening, direct services on-site and/or virtually using telehealth, and ensure continuity of care for children with chronic conditions.
  • Working with each Complex Area Superintendent and School Principals, the HK HIDOE Program is creating a model that reflects the needs of the individual schools and HIDOE Complex Areas considering student demographics, staffing patterns, available community support services, and healthcare access.
  • The HK Leadership Team works directly with HIDOE to provide access to evidence-based expertise in health promotion and disease prevention; alignment and coordination opportunities for health and education; and resources for public and health sciences education partnership.
  • HK nurses coordinate and collaborate with the Public Health Nurses from the Hawaii Department of Health in the prevention and control of communicable disease and supporting students with required school health needs.
