Nursing Students Study Research During a Summer Abroad Program in Dublin, Ireland
Five students from UH Manoa Nursing spent four weeks of study at the University College of Dublin (UCD), Ireland. Nursing students Lisa Bell, Tia Lau, Kekai Palafox, Christy Rios and Amanda Sakai were joined by Jessica Lawler who is currently earning a degree in Kinesiology at UH Manoa.
This is the second year that nursing students have taken classes during a summer abroad experience at UCD. The research course was intensive and taught at a very high level. Each student received mentoring for a required research project.
Students were able to find time to take advantage of the cultural and recreational opportunities in Ireland. Such adventures included an overnight stay on the Inish Mor, (which is one of the Aran Isles in the far West of Ireland where the Gaelic language is more common than English). They also tried their hand at Irish games, including hurling – the world’s fastest game on grass. Like most visitors to Ireland they also toured the Guinness Brewery and explored the many museums and galleries in Dublin.
Accompanying the students was UH Manoa Nursing associate professor John Casken, PhD, RN. Nursing students who are interested in the experience should register for NUR 363. For more information, contact Dr. Casken at casken@hawaii.edu or (808) 956-5750.
