Biography
Samia Valeria Ozorio Dutra is a nurse from Brazil who received her Ph.D. from the University of South Florida (USF). Dr. Dutra contributes to gut microbiome research since working on National Institutes of Health grants at the USF College of Nursing-Biobehavioral lab in 2017. Dr. Dutra studies the gut-brain axis, focusing on mental health promotion and neurodevelopment. Her experience includes a comprehensive understanding of mental health, women’s health, oncology (breast cancer), and gut microbiome (Omics). She taught women’s health for 5 five years at Potiguar University in Natal, Brazil. Dr. Dutra also has an interest in instrumental technology, as can be seen by her dissertation research. Her dissertation was an international collaboration between the United Kingdom, United States, and Brazil.
She is a fellow of the Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning Consortium to Advance Health Equity and Researcher Diversity (AIM-AHEAD) and Leading Emerging and Diverse Scientists to Success (LEADS) Programs.
Dr. Dutra helps reduce health disparities among Native Hawaiians by identifying risk factors for depression severity, which promotes health equity by allowing early detection and management of the individuals at risk of developing depression. Dr. Dutra is eager to receive community input on potential mental health promotion research and the customization of interventions to improve outcomes.
Dr. Dutra is interested in exploring/establishing a link between the mother’s microbiome during pregnancy (which has been linked to perinatal complications) and the child’s development beyond the first few weeks of life.
She is a member of Sigma, an international honor society of nurses, the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN), and Fulbright, which promotes international goodwill through student exchanges in the fields of education, culture, and science. It is the largest U.S. exchange program for students.
