Joanne Loos, PhD, Science Writer

Joanne Loos

Dr. Joanne Loos is the science writer for NAWSON. She is a professional journalist and editor by trade, with experience as an editor for popular home/feature magazines, and contributing writer for the Honolulu Star Advertiser. She also serves as a faculty lecturer for the UHM School of Communications, teaching foundation courses and an upper-level information technology and health communication course. She earned a PhD in communication and information sciences and a Master of Arts degree from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. She completed her baccalaureate degree in journalism with specialties in business and sociology from Ohio University.

Jenny Collins, MSN, MBA, APRN-Rx, FNP-C, GEPN Co-Director & Instructor

Jenny CollinsHaving served as a faculty lecturer from 2013 to 2016, Jenny Collins is no stranger to the NAWSON ohana. Returning to Hawaii from Greensboro, North Carolina, she is ready to take her role as an instructor to the next level, bringing with her years of experience as a family nurse practitioner with more than 15 years of teaching experience. Jenny completed her Master of Business Administration/Master Science in Nursing degrees at the University of Phoenix, and received a bachelor’s of science in nursing degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Gary Glauberman, PhD, RN, PHNA-BC, NHDP-BC, APHN Program Director & Assistant Professor

Dr. Gary Glaubermanphoto of Gary Glauberman accepted a new position as assistant professor. Prior to this new appointment, he served NAWSON for nearly eight years as an instructor. His areas of expertise include community/public health nursing, disaster nursing and global health, and he is dedicated to continuing research on population health and nursing. Dr. Glauberman continues to serve as the faculty advisor for the Student Nurses’ Association at UH Manoa and as the treasurer for the UH Manoa Nursing Alumni Association. He is a board-certified National Healthcare Disaster Professional and Advance Public Health Nurse. He earned his PhD, Master’s of Science, and Bachelor’s of Science at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

Alison Miyasaki, MS, APRN, Instructor

Alison MiyasakiAfter serving NAWSON as lecturer in spring 2019, Alison Miyasaki joined our ohana as an instructor. She has a strong background in adult critical care, starting off as a bedside nurse in the ICU and cardiac surgery. She then used her experience to teach as a critical care educator, and then shifted to patient safety and quality. Prior to NAWSON, she was the manager of the Queen’s Clinically Integrated Physician Network Information Systems of The Queen’s Health Systems. Alison earned a Master’s of Science in Nursing degree from the University of California, San Francisco, and a baccalaureate degree in nursing from UH Manoa.

Donna-Marie Palakiko, PhD, APRN, Assistant Professor

Dr. Donna-Marie PalakikoDonna Palakiko joined NAWSON as assistant professor. She is an ardent advocate for the concerns of access to health care for Native Hawaiians and indigenous communities within the Pacific. She brings to our ohana more than 20 years of experience as a community health nurse, health strategist, health care administrator and nurse researcher. She completed her PhD in nursing at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, earned her Master of Science at the University of California-San Francisco, and finished her BS in Nursing at the University of San Francisco.
