SNA Mentor Mentee Program Meet Up and Okinawan Festival Volunteer Event

Back to School Mentor Mentee Meet Up

The Student Nurses’ Association Mentor-Mentee Program (MMP) held its annual Meet & Greet on Monday, August 27, 2018. This year, MMP has close to 90 members: 29 freshman DEN mentees, 17 first semester mentees, 6 first semester DEN mentees/mentors, and 38 third and fifth semester mentors. The event was very successful with record attendance. During the event, MMP participants were given an overview of the program highlighting program changes, requirements and upcoming events. Students enjoyed delicious food while getting to know their mentee/mentor partner.

The MMP program changes this year include offering mentors to freshman High School Direct Entry in Nursing (DEN) students and changing the requirements to be considered an active member. SNA opened MMP to freshman DEN students in an effort to help them feel more included in our nursing program and to better welcome them into our UHM School of Nursing & Dental Hygiene ohana.

Okinawa Festival

On September 1 – 2, 2018, twelve 5th semester nursing students joined more than 2,000 volunteers at the 36th Annual Okinawan Festival at the Hawaii Convention Center. The event attracts more than 50,000 people each year and features taiko drumming, martial arts showcases, a cultural village room, and Anda-dog. UHM Nursing students assisted with the blood pressure screenings, health education, and first aid booths alongside physicians, RNs, and medical students.
