Biography
Lorrie Wong is the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and the HMSA Distinguished Professor for Interprofessional Education. She has taught at the University of Hawaii at Manoa Nancy Atmospera-Walch School of Nursing (NAWSON) since 1989. She is an adult advanced practice nurse with experience in critical care, simulation based education and interprofessional education.
Prior to this role she was the Interim Associate Dean for Academic Affairs for 2 years and the Director for of the UH Translational Health Science Simulation Center for 17 years. In that role, she was responsible for overseeing the development of the University of Hawaii School of Nursing’s simulation program. She worked with the University of Hawaii Translational Health Science Simulation Center development team to oversee the expansion of the school’s simulation capabilities through the development of the new state-of-the art Translational Health Science Simulation Center and the organization of a statewide Simulation Collaborative.
She received her PhD from the NAWSON, her master’s degree in nursing from Columbia University, a bachelor’s degree in nursing and post-master’s certificate in adult advanced practice nursing from the NAWSON. She has been honored numerous times with the Nurse Educator Award, a recognition provided by the graduating class of nursing students, and received the University of Hawaii Chancellor’s Citation for Meritorious Teaching in 2004.
In 2010 she was selected to participate in the National League for Nursing Simulation Educator Program. Her research interests include integrating new technology into health care education for interprofessional groups of students as well as clients with chronic diseases. She has been invited to present at local, national and international conferences on the topic of simulation learning methodology and curriculum integration.
CHSE-A Certification
On December 18, 2012, Dr. Lorrie Wong earned her Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE)* credential, becoming the first person in Hawaii to hold this internationally recognized professional designation.
At the February 2014 International Meeting on Simulation in Healthcare (IMSH) in San Francisco, Dr. Wong was one of just 16 simulation educators world-wide to be awarded the Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator-Advanced (CHSE-A)** certification.
Today Dr. Wong continues her efforts to help advance the field of healthcare simulation, interprofessional education and promote excellence in nursing education for students and professionals alike, at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and internationally across the Pacific.
* The Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE) from the Society for Simulation in Healthcare is the internationally recognized professional certification for individuals involved with simulation-based learning. The certification indicates that the individual has expertise in the area of healthcare simulation education for undergraduates, graduates, allied health, and healthcare practitioners.
** The Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator-Advanced (CHSE-A) Certification recognizes the leaders and mentors who have demonstrated the highest levels of expertise in the field of healthcare simulation.
