UHM Nursing Office of Research Launches Scholarly Speaker Series
The University of Hawaii at Manoa Nursing Office of Research launches its 2024-2025 Scholarly Speaker Series events this Fall. The series features some of the brightest minds in nursing research, offering free talks to nursing students and anyone interested in health.
September 2024
First up is a students-only HONU Scientists meeting, featuring a talk by Dr. Donna-Marie Palakiko titled “Asthma and Innovation.” HONU, the Hui to promote Opportunities for the development of NUrse Scientists, is a faculty-student organization with an aim to provide a supportive environment for students to learn about and engage in nursing research. Specific activities and functions of the hui are to foster mentoring, professional and peer networking, and other activities that promote nursing research. The event will occur on September 24, 2024, from 2 to 3 p.m.
October 2024
Next up is the Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) meeting. STTI is the nursing honor society. Here, Dr. Molly Altman will present a talk titled: “Reproductive Justice: A framework for improving equity in pregnancy-related care.” This event takes place on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. and is open to students only.
November 2024
The November event features the Fall 2024 Matsuda Speaker Distinguished Lecture. Dr. Allyssa Harris, Dean and Professor at Prairie View A&M University School of Nursing, will give a talk titled: Leading Nursing Science: Fostering Inclusivity and Excellence at Minority-Serving Institutions. The lecture will be followed by discussion and refreshments. The event takes place on Monday, November 18, 2024, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. and is open to the public. January 2025
We kick off the new year with a HONU Scientists meeting, featuring a talk by Dr. Kyoung Eun Lee titled “Culturally-Tailored Community-Based Prenatal Education for Immigrant Women.” HONU, the Hui to promote Opportunities for the development of NUrse Scientists will continue in their mission to promote nursing research through connecting students to nurse scientists. The event will occur on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, from 2 to 3 p.m and is open to students only.
February 2025
The February event features the Spring 2025 Matsuda Speaker Distinguished Lecture. Dr. Gregory Zimet, Professor Emeritus of Pediatrics and Psychiatry at the Indiana University School of Medicine and the Co-Director for the Indianapolis Center for HPV Research joins us at a pivotal time for HPV vaccination efforts. His talk, HPV Vaccination at Ages 9-10 Years: Benefits, Challenges, and Risks, will cover current research, policies, and more regarding this topic. The event will take place on Monday, February 24, 2025, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. and is open to the public. Registration is required and will remain open until maximum capacity is reached.
April 2025
The 2025 Nursing Research Scholarship Poster Festival returns to the UHM Campus Center Ballroom. The 2024 Poster Festival drew huge crowds and tons of interest from the health care community. This event will take place on Thursday, April 17, 2025 from 1 to 3 p.m. All are welcome to attend.
