Nursing Faculty Share Key Insights for Hawaii Health at the Hawaii State Capitol during Manoa Research Day 2024
Four distinguished nursing faculty from the University of Hawaii at Manoa (UHM) Nancy Atmospera-Walch School of Nursing (NAWSON) presented their research endeavors at the Manoa Research Day 2024 held on February 6 at the Hawaii State Capitol. The event, featuring informational tables, demonstrations and interactive activities, emphasized UHM’s role as a high-activity research university and its global impact through strategic research areas.
Dr. Gary Glauberman highlighted crucial aspects of family readiness for disasters within the community with his study: “Predictors of emergency preparedness among parents in Hawaii.” Dr. Samia Dutra presented on “Improving risk detection of depression among native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders using Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning,” which described innovative approaches to mental health challenges. Dr. Frankie Hale addressed critical issues in nursing education and workforce readiness in her presentation titled, “Understanding New Graduate Nurses’ Perspectives on Transitioning into the Workforce.” Dr. Donna-Marie Palakiko highlighted a unique viewpoint on health disparities and chronic disease management among indigenous populations through her research, “Asthma: A Native Hawaiian Perspective.”
Dr. Glauberman commented on the significance of the event, sharing that “at the Manoa Research Day, we were not just there to share our latest research findings, but were actively engaging with community stakeholders at the Capitol. It was a rare and valuable opportunity for us nursing faculty to directly showcase our work in leading and improving health and health care in Hawaii. We were also able to connect with fellow UH researchers who share a passion and commitment to improving conditions in Hawai‘i.”
The presentations provided by the four nursing faculty underscored UHM Nursing’s dedication to advancing health care, health equity and innovation in addressing the state’s health challenges.
