The 2013 Pacific Institute of Nursing Conference is hosted by the Hawaii State Center for Nursing. The theme of this year’s conference is Partnership with Parity: The New Paradigm. This theme was selected to reflect the importance of nurses collaborating to influence the changing landscape of health care delivery. This paradigm shift creates an opportunity to influence new standards and structures for practice. With a limited healthcare workforce, we must all practice to the top of our education and training. Respect and knowledge of all health professional roles will be required as teams will be the primary unit of delivery. While we have worked in teams for many years, this paradigm has not been well designed for optimal patient-centered outcomes.
The keynote speakers are national visionary leaders involved in designing and implementing innovative strategies for role development and patient-centered team care across the spectrum of health and illness. For those of us new or involved in leading this journey, their perspectives can serve to encourage and motivate as well as spark new thinking for discussion and application in our own practice setting. Designing and implementing new models of care will be required for the Affordable Care Act to realize the goal of better health care for Americans through broader coverage, more effectively and efficiently delivered.
